TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return), sometimes referred to as TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return), is a strategic solution to cat overpopulation. Cats are caught in humane traps, neutered/spayed, given a rabies vaccine and a combo vaccine, and returned to their original location after a brief recovery period. While at the vet, cats can receive other necessary medical treatments, such as wound care, an antibiotic injection, testing for disease, dental evaluations, and more.
The main focus of Cache Valley Cat Wranglers is to reduce overpopulation and suffering among the valley’s community cats. Sometimes all a cat needs in to be neutered, vaccinated, and returned, but sometimes we need to test a sample of cats in the colony for FIV/FeLV, treat upper respiratory infections or infected wounds, and examine old wounds and injuries to see what can be done to reduce the cat’s overall suffering.
TNR drastically reduces cat populations over time. Refer to the graphic below for an estimation of how many cats are produced from one female cat and her offspring not being spayed. Many colonies consist of only a few mature males and many females, but one male can cause dozens of pregnancies in a year.
